Hanaca's Hat

Once there lived a famous samurai warrior and his beautiful daughter Hanaca. He covered her head with a strange hat that hid her face. People ridiculed her funny hat and laughed at her. Unable to bear their remarks, she fled her country and became a king’s maid in a neighbouring country.

Hanaca soon pleased everybody with her work and the prince too fell in love with her. However, the king opposed this friendship as she was a mere servant and banished Hanaca from his kingdom. She was about to leave when a great wind blew away her hat and revealed her exquisite face. Everyone in the palace stood stupefied to see her face and her head, which was covered with precious jewels.

One of the king’s courtiers recognised her as the daughter of the samurai and told the king. The king then arranged for Hanaca’s marriage to the prince.
