One day, Jack went out in the world to seek his fortune. On his way, he was joined by a cat, a dog, a goat, a bull, and a rooster. While camping in a house at night, they found a group of robbers inside. All of them screamed so hard that the robbers were scared and fled, leaving their loot behind. Jack knew that they would return to recover their money. He made the cat sit on a chair, the dog under the table, the goat on the stairs, the bull in the cellar, and the rooster on the rooftop.
Later, when the robbers returned they ran out of the house, screaming in fright. One robber spoke about an old lady sitting on the chair who had scratched him. The second robber complained about a shoemaker under the table who had hit him with an awl, while the third robber said that a man had knocked him down the stairs and hit him with an axe, and someone on the rooftop had also tried to hit him.
